Default P042e

If anyone is wondering just how well the emissions equipment will hold up on the 6.7, I may be able to shed some light. My '07 has 82,000 miles. Last week the check engine light illuminated and I pulled the code P042E - EGR stuck open. I removed the EGR valve and cleaned it with carb cleaner. The plunger was out but it easily pushed back into place so I had my doubts that soot was the problem. I cleared the code and all was well for about 4 days. When the check engine light appeared the 2nd time, same code, I took it to the dealership. The EGR valve had an internal failure and was replaced. They also replaced the DPF due to "internal failure", replaced both O2 sensors, replaced exhaust temp. sensor, and wrapped the exhaust pipe with heat tape. Good news/bad news.......Good news - It was coverd by the 100,000 mile warranty. Bad news - if it wasn't the bill would have been $2,756. The dealership has been great about filing all repairs to date as warranty work. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I don't have $3000 to be shelling out in emissions repairs.

The 07 trucks had a bad time because Cummins/Dodge rushed the truck to market so they could brag about their 2010 compliant emissions. Unfortunately it didn't work and screwed the emissions up and I'm not certain they have it worked out yet so after the dealership does the latest flash they then have no choice but to start shotgunning parts. Unfortunately (at least for my truck) 90% of the codes seen aren't valid.

So we're now in a race between them figuring it out and us reaching 100,000 miles and having to either sell the trucks (For what?). Shell out over a grand to delete the emissions and hope (A.) we don't get caught or (B.) they don't start smog checking in our areas because I don't think these trucks will pass even when they aren't throwing codes.

I have 23,000 miles or a little under a year to make that decision and it's sad because I was hoping to retire this truck to the farm next year and have it for decades.

Squid,
I absolutely love this truck and would like to keep it for a very long time. Our options are limited as you stated. And it's not just Dodge. I have a customer with a King Ranch Powerstroke and his truck has been in for the DPF as well. What are the chances that someone, factory or aftermarket, will come out with the Urea injection system for our trucks? I'm not sure if this would be enough to eliminate the EGR and/or DPF. It looks to me like the diesel will have a rough ride regardless of make for the next few years until they get it sorted out. Is there enough data to know if the 2009 trucks have improved significantly?

I don't see how the 09 is any better since they have the same parts and Flashes unless our trucks were just so screwed up in the beginning that they should be bought back because they will never be right?

All I can say is that my 09 has never popped a code and never missed a beat. i havn't had to go to the dealer for anything. I drive with the Ex brake on all the time, I spool the turbo daily and unless I am driving at highway speeds I keep the tow haul mode on. I have 8300k miles. I changed the oil the first time at 4500 miles and drained the fuel filter( no water though). I drive more city than highway. I have no mods except i pulled the restrictive foam in the intake..... And yes I am knocking on wood as I write this!!

I had no problems to speak of and then at 50,000 miles the truck started freaking out.

well I 'm at a little over 20,000 and try to keep up on the maint. schedule ,fluid and filter changes, and just ordered the maint. pack from Geno's garage (great place), so far my truck has had no problems with the exhaust or emission parts and I hope it stays that way! I only run non-bio ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and most has came from the same place and it is a newer station that opened before I got my truck at this time last year, I run with the exhaust brake on all the time, keep the revs up (manual trans.) and do both city and highway driving, make a few trips of 500 miles one way or so a year, and tow up to 11,000lbs (28ft. car hauler) several times a year, I try to use the truck as they wanted it to be , and I know for sure the thing is most happy when its being worked, but like most people I : a)can't buy one to let it sit till you need it, and b) like to drive it as daily transportation as it can do so many things well. its hard not to pick it to drive, I find my 04 mustang gt sitting more and more, and now with winter around the corner my 2500 4x4 will be THE ride till spring so I hope for many, many, many more trouble free miles and I hope dodge and cummins realize thats why we bought them in the first place, not because I liked the extra $6,200 on the window sticker, I just thought it would be able to do the work and be reliable, and that would make it worth the extra money and maint. mine was built 05/08 and I hope mine don't start acting up at 50,000 miles, or at 150,000 but if it hapens I'm sure we will figure it out and put whatever it is on here to help others with theirs, because if you are any thing like me I'm not ready to get rid of this truck!!!!

Here Here. That's what I'm talking about. I use mine every day for my commute to and from work, We tow (the 5'er is grossed at 11K) (or the smoker at 4200#) as often as the work schedule permits, right now it seems to be every weekend, at least to get out of town, usually 50 to 60 miles each way. This weekend we will be going south to the El Paso area (about 250 miles) then over to Ruidoso, NM to see 'Mine that bird' lead out the quarter horses on monday for the futurity. Good luck with your truck, mine has 35K of trouble free driving under its belt.

Glad to hear from the ones with out any problems ! I think there may be quite a few out there? not that I mind hearing from the people with trucks that have an issue because I'm sure that has kept me from having problems out of mine thus far, learning what works for these trucks and what don't ,so hats off to all on this site as we are in this together from my point of view....best of luck to all ,and as time goes by I will keep you all updated with how things are going with mine!

Check this out.....A week ago I left for Colorado pulling my 33' 5th wheel. The 6.7 has gobs of torque and no issues pulling the trailer over 12,000 ft. passes. The exhaust brake did it's job as well when descending, hardly ever needing to apply the brakes. I was impressed with how effortlessly this truck tows even at altitude. You guys already know the problems recently with my truck that the dealership addressed as warranty. The newest flash may be the trick. One afternoon my buddy and I decided to drive up to an old ghost town (Crystal) and we ended up on what basically became an ATV trail. We spent 5 hours in 4 wheel low on a "road" that was so narrow I had to fold my mirrors in to keep them from scraping the mountain as I tried not to slide off the opposite side. There was no way to turn around once we figured out what we had gotten ourselves into and backing up was out of the question. The worst part was a 12% grade over solid granite that looked more like a rock stairway than a road. Beat the hell out of the truck getting over that stretch ( 2 bent rims from rocks and chunks of rubber missing from the tires). The motor sounded like crap at this point and I was really beginning to wonder if she was going to die on me. But she managed to stay running and we made it over Schofield Pass (look it up on the internet....several jeeps in the bottom of the ravine and a dozen drivers killed. Also called the Devil's Punchbowl). Here is what I learned by putting the truck through such a grueling experience. 1) How in the world do you drive in 4x4 low for 5 hours without loading up the DPF? I never once got any messages on the overhead or check engine lights. I did smell raw diesel at idle more than once. Does the newest flash allow regeneration at idle? 2) After getting on some paved roads and driving at speed I could feel a lot of back pressure on the motor, like driving with the EB on even though it wasn't. I am assuming at this point the DPF was creating the back pressure. 3) After one day of driving on paved roads the truck started running normal again. I can now tell when regeneration is taking place whereas before I could not. There is a definite "whoosh" sound from the turbo and some bucking sensations when regen starts. Soon afterwards, at least when under load like towing, there is a small pop or backfire in the exhaust that can be heard and felt. This will last about 20 inutes and then return to normal driving and sounds. I intend to ask the tech if this is normal and if it will damage the exhaust. I believe the heat from the catalytic converter is igniting the diesel, maybe because the new flash injects more fuel than previously. Any thoughts on that? I don't intend to put my truck through anything like that again. So I am hopeful the newest flash is the main reason she made the trip with no lasting side affects.
