Hi everyone. My oil is staying black even after oil changes. It was my impression that after break-in that it would remain clear at least a short while. I am ignoring the monitor and instead doing changes every 5k-6k miles. Any comments would be appreciated.

Oil always turns black mostly from heat but also from exhaust gas that's recirculated into the combustion chamber per the EPA.

Even with the EGR unplugged or deleted, the engine oil in a diesel goes black.
If you unplug the EGR, you should notice that the oil stays cleaner. Look closely along the edges of the oil on the dip stick, you should be able to see through the oil. I run an unplugged EGR and a bypass filter. The oil still gets black but certainly retains that opaqueness as above. A few years ago (well 25) I was around many 855 Cummins engines in large farm tractors and hi-way trucks. The oil in those engines was always black as well. Change the oil and the filter every 5,000 to 7,000 miles and all will be well. I change the oil and filter in my truck every 10,000 KMs.
