Question A little help please?

I was recently thrust into Cummins ownership by way of having to repossess a vehicle in which I financed for someone close to me. Upon taking possession of the vehicle and after driving it some, I've noticed that it makes an awful "squawking" sound when I make left or right hand corners. There is also a slight shimmy in the steering in sequence with the "squawking". My first thought was that the ball joints are worn out. To me, they appear to be the ones that rolled out of the factory due to their lack of grease zerks, but I may be wrong.

Do any of you more experienced truck guys know what the problem may be and what my best avenue of fixing it would be?

Also, I've heard lots of horror stories about the exhaust and emissions systems in these trucks, although not as bad as the new trucks which require DEF. I've been blessed with a DPF. (Thanks, EPA) Are there any things which I need to look out for in this truck such as idling for any lengthy period of time, etc?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

KC

Default

Check your Tie-rod ends and if it's a 4X4 look at the front axle U joints too. I've had to replace both of these with only 100,000 miles.

As for the DPF drive it hard, turn the exhaust brake on all the time and don't sit and Idle it.
