Default Jake Brake

Hey and Yes I'm a newbie.

I just bought a 3500 4x2 to tow our fifth wheel.

During the delivery, the service manager said I needed to do a two things in additional to following scheduled maintenance schedule. He said I needed to

1. Drain the water off the fuel filter every week.

2. Always run with the Jake Brake on.

What do you guys think?

Thanx

running with the exhaust brake on is a good idea, draining the fuel filter every week seems a little much, there is a water in fuel light in the gauges, look in the owners manual to see where it is in the cluster, it looks like a gas station pump with water drops next to it. you can see it light up when you turn the key on during the lights check for a second then it should go out unless there is enough water in the fuel filter to turn the light on so you drain the water out. I have never had it come on In my truck (I've had it over a year and 23,000 miles) and when I drain the fuel filter before I change it , I have never had any water present, but I almost always get fuel from the same place (unless I'm away from home) and it is a newer station built just before I got my truck (new tanks) and they sell a lot of diesel fuel (just off the interstate) so they have fresh fuel often, also I run only ultra low sulfur diesel with no bio-diesel,and last follow the scheduled maintenance, and a lot of people change fuel filters every 10,000 miles not the 15,000 like the schedule says ,and the CCV filter should be changed sooner than the schedule as well ,but it vairies with each truck and use, I plan on changing mine as early as 30,000 miles but I won't go past 50,000 with out changing it. look around the site there is a ton of info on just about every thing with these trucks, hope this helps. Oh and enjoy the new hauler , mine makes me smile ear to ear when I get in it each day, as it does so many things well , but when it realy shines is when the trailer gets hooked up.!best of luck.

I think Steve is right about having to drain that fuel filter that often being a bit much. Don't buy your diesel at the corner gas station. That fuel doesn't get the turnover that the commercial sites do and so it sits there and takes on moisture. I buy my fuel where the school buses go (CFN). It's a busy place so it's always fresh and the school districts won't put up with bad fuel in their buses. I've got 5000 mi on mine and haven't drained it yet. I drained my Ford 1 or 2 times a year. It had a water in fuel indicator but it never lit up.

I would like to point out that according to the CUMMINS owners guide the drain should occur daily ! Yep .. I said daily ... Ill post the link if you like ..I know I did on other boards ... not sure if I did here.

Argh .. heck ... lemme go get it, then edit this post ...

Thar it is ...

I would suggest that you buy the Cummins owners manual for the Cummins ISB CM2150 6.7L .. Bulletin Number 4021601 ... go to https://store.cummins.com/store/index.html

You may need to register. The online version is given in the link below and you'd have to register for sure .. $$$
