Default High Idle Enable

Just a question about having the dealer enable the high idle function.
What benefit other than faster warmup does this feature provide?

You don't want to idle these trucks; so if you are in a situation that you need to have the truck running the idle up with the exhaust brake on would help. For me when we are hunting in December or out in the woods getting our tree it is nice to have a place to warm up.

Yup, when you're idling the EGR is working thus the truck is ingesting a lot of black crap. By idling up the EGR is shut off.

It should be noted that these trucks (6.7 Cummins '07 to '09) have an automatic high idle feature which will automatically up the idle to 1,000 RPM after 2 minutes (I think). The "high Idle" feature that we all talk about is actually the PTO feature that when working, allows the driver to set the idle at a desired RPM between 1000 and 1600, using the cruise control switches. This feature must be activated (turned on) using a scanner. Some programmers will perform the turn on as well. On the dealer's Star Scan, the PTO feature is located in the "Export" section. It has become apparent that few dealer Techs in warm climate areas are either familiar with the PTO feature or desire to perform the service. Good dealers in northern areas turn the PTO feature on during the PDI.
It's interesting that the new 2010 Cummins trucks have the PTO feature turned on at the factory.

I don't mean to steal the thread, but I didn't think the following was worth starting another thread. I called the dealer today to ask about having mine enabled and they quoted $46. Can you believe that!?!? I know they're called stealerships for a reason, but that is just downright piracy. Anyone else have a stealer charge them to have this feature enabled?

If you take it in just to have the PTO feature turned on, then yup, they are going to charge you. After all they have to put it in the shop and pay a tech to do the job. Sorry, but I don't see that as unreasonable. You could possibly get around the charge by piggy backing it on to your next flash up grade. They would already have the Star Scanner hooked up and they are into the computer. This way it would be a no charge at my dealer.

Mine will do it if you take it in for an oil change. The dealer I go to checks for bulletins and updates every time you take it in for service. At 49.00 for an oil change it isn't too bad.

It sounds like if the engine raises the idle after two minutes to a 1000 rpm (I noticed mine doing that a few days ago) then the sooting is "not" occuring. Is this correct? If that is true then idleing is not a problem as far as sooting up the exhaust... convince me more....

I find the high idle feature handy when jump starting equipment. If the battery is completly dead I use the high idle while charging the battery on the dead engine for a short while before cranking with the jumpers attached.

I took mine in to have the pto enabled and the dealer was going to charge me $30, for the service ,and scince I didn't buy my truck there ,I thought it to be fair,(although i feel all these fetures should be turned on to begin with) but they didn't charge me because the service tech turned it on, but it still did not function. Later I found out that on manual trans. trucks the ground wire for it is not connected at the factory. why they don't hook up the wires for the manual trans,?(I have no real clue, maybe it can accidentaly be put in gear?) after hooking up the ground wire ,mine now works great and once you start using it you wonder why they just don't turn them on to begin with.
