Default Exhuast gas temperatures

I just installed a pyrometer in my exhaust manifold before the turbo and while cruising I am at 900 degrees and when I give it a little throttle it jumps to 1100 to 1200. Are these normal temperature readings for the 6.7 and what can I expect when I start to tow my 30' fifth wheel.

I find those to be normal numbers. When you are in regen you may see higher temps. I tow a 35’ FW and have seen 1500 briefly going over the mountains. But even when not towing if you get on it like you should every now and again you will see high temps. So what I see is about 300 to 500 at a stop 500 to 1100 for driving, and up to1500 or a little more briefly in extreme condition.

They sound normal to me...I've got the thermocouple just after the turbo...I'll see around 1200 while towing in regen. Watch your gauge, you'll be able to tell when it goes into regen...Best money you could have spent on this truck
BTW, Squid should be able to give you some temps as well.

Question

Thanks for the info; I am also wondering how long you let your truck idle before shutting it down. As soon as I stop the temp. goes right down to around 400 deg. I usually let it idle for a minute or two.

Those are the temps I see. 800 to 900 on the highway, 1100 to 1200 during regeneration and I have my Turbo timer set to 450 so 400 is good. The only time I ever see Temps that make me worry is right after Regen is complete I've seen temps up to 1400 when towing and accelerating into a 40 MPH wind. Granted the truck does an awesome job of defueling and getting the temps back down in a hurry but it still raises an eyebrow.

Speaking of EGT. For those out there lurking or thinking about buying a Cummins, High EGT's are your friend with the 6.7L. We want our EGT's high to assist in passive regeneration which doesn't take extra diesel. It's when we never get our EGT's above 1000 that the truck has to take over and initiate an active regeneration to clean out the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) by introducing diesel into the exhaust thus dropping our MPG.

I had questions about the egts so I asked Cummins. The following is direct from Cummins.

READ FROM BOTTOM UP
Doyle, you are correct, running the engine full throttle up an incline,
will not damage the engine. There are safeguards in place to prevent
damaging the engine, such as coolant temp. and air intake temp, these will
both give off a warning and also reduce power to the engine. RPM's should
stay above 1600 when pulling a hill.

Thank you for your response. It sounds like according to your answer that
if I were to "put my foot into it" climbing a hill pulling my 18K fifth
wheel, that the warranty is good and the engine is designed and protected
internally from overheating the turbo and engine. Is this correct or
should I be backing out of the throttle a little? I have not made any
modifications to the engine and don't plan to but I have a pyrometer
installed to monitor temps.

Doyle, we are not able to provide the EGT's for our engines. If the engine
is, as built by Cummins, there is no concern to monitor the EGT. If the
engine has had modifications, then neither Cummins nor Dodge are
responsible if a failure occurs, due to high EGT's.

=============================

D and P Truck Repair : I service the Dodge 6.7 L pickups and am asked all
the time the proper operating EGTs temps of the turbo. There appears to be
a lot of confusion and bad concernng EGTs.

What is the Maximum EGTs (preturbo) that the engine can achieve? My
experience shows around 1350 F.
How much should a driver back off the fuel to not burn the engine down? I
am suggesting 200 F to my customers. Please give me guidance and your
thoughts concerning EGTs. Thank You

I am on my second set (two pickups) of Isspro guages. I purchased a three guage combo along with pillar post from Dieselmanor.com. The kits include everything you need and great instructions. I have pyro, trans temp, and boost.

thanks,
I ask my dealer that question and the answer was "If the exhaust manifold cracked it would not be covered because I had drilled it." Everything else would be covered. So I would say to ask your dealer and go from there.
