Default Dealer warranty issue today ...

Well it was bound to happen to me at some point, especially in California !

Went to the dealer today to have the oil change, change all gear oils, lube and ECU update to resolve a problem. I keep a very tight schedule for my truck.

Everything went fine, got home and sat down to read the paperwork and was shocked. It stated on it that I had device that altered the ECU and against warranty and warranty could be void. So got back in the truck, drove 40 minutes to get back to the dealer and question the comment. They said I had a device that altered timing, said no and prove it. They pointed to the Edge unit on the dash ..... The tech took the performance timing runs as a "timing altering device" ...

Well the manager come to talk to me and said anything connected to the ODBII voids warranty goes against EPA and CARB .... I was about to fall on the floor laughing and could not believe he said it with a straight face.

So put my electronic engineering hat on and law hat on top of that and started to explain and broke things down by each claim .....

After they admitted that there was no EPA / CARB / FED law that prevented the use of the ODBII port by a consumer, they gave up on the front. But he tried hard and was nice about it ... but still lost on that one !

After addressing the issue of the INSIGHT, I ask them to prove the vendor wrong and the service tech (which just graduated from Cummins service school) right.... Lost on the front also.

Then they tried to attack on the a different front that was based on, what is my reasoning for the additional gauges ? Why does someone need additional gauges ? Good lord ! So explained why in several different ways and how that relates to how the truck is used (based on years of being a 18 wheeler driver paying my way through school).

They then proceeded to update my files and draft a letter to me that they where wrong and there was no issues and no warranty problems. ECU update and PTO idle done for free under warranty.

Man, what a pain !!! Beware, be informed, know your rights.

Also while I was there, someone came in with a blown cummins truck and they found the exhaust prior to the dpf was blown apart ..... Turns out the DPF was plugged solid the exhaust pipe blew under pressure .... Constant city driving on very short trips, never hit the highway !

BTW, had the PTO IDLE (high idle) function enabled and there seems to be a change in the instructions .....

To use:

1. engine running ...
2. truck in park, emergency brakes on ...
3. turn on cruise control ...
4. hit set once ...
5. wait, engine should idle up to 1200 rpm ...
6. use accel or decel to speed up or slow down the idle ...
7. to turn off, turn off cruise control ...

Cheers all.

Good for you! I understand that they are taking a beating on these trucks but who's fault is that? For Dodge and Cummins to not know who drives these trucks and how is criminal. They advertised all over the place how green these trucks were and when earth consciences people bought them over gas powered and even 5.9L trucks and then started having problems they now turn to us as being the problem. We don't drive them right, we use programmers that cause the sooting problem, blah, blah, blah............Dodge and Cummins aren't doing themselves any favors by trying to blame us for their lack of customer knowledge, engineering and testing. Especially when you consider that they had until 2010 to meet the EPA requirements but chose to rush these trucks to market and use us, the owners, as test subjects.

Yup !

Now they are thinking that these precious metal DPF that we have need to be done differently like using uria (spelling ??) method which is a "green" mix material put into a separate tank that is injected into the exhaust instead of diesel ......

Wonder if we get the optional for a retrofit and ECU update to go that route and save fuel !

I agree, short sighted design based on a marketing ploy that is backfiring. Should have let the engineers to their jobs and then marketing could have done theirs AFTER, not have marketing drive engineering ..... Have to deal with that daily, so damn stupid !

I'm proud of you my man...If more of us would stick to our guns as educated consumers, dealers would be a better place to visit.
BTW, did you get your exhaust wrapped while you were there...I see that as being a very effective mod for our trucks

Once again the sad thing about a TSB over a recall is they don't have to do the TSB unless you actually are pulling the code.

But I am curious of the issue you were having that you needed a flash and which one was it. Thanks

The reason for a software update (specific model code update, not a complete reflash) was due to intermittent issue of stumbling and/or some smoking from the exhaust. There was an update specifically for that. Have notice today that after 700 mile run, the truck was running very nicely and only had 3 regens (egr cable pulled back in currently), usually I have 5 under the same conditions.

On my performance engines, I always wrap the exhaust and turbo to properly control temperature and chance spooling of the turbo. Wrapping the exhaust from the turbo to DPF would you to get more heat to the DPF without fueling it since you are not loosing the heat via dissipation via the pipes. Lots of benefits on doing it on your own without a TSB/recall notice ....

Cheers all !

No. This was in the white range (best that I can tell). Black smoke after dpf is not good, unless they installed it backwards .... That means the dpf is damaged somehow, could be from cleaned wrong or it getting plugged and cracked. I would take it back to the dealer and have them check it again, want to make sure that gets replaced under warranty

As for my other post, this "chance spooling of the turbo" should have been "change spooling of the turbo" ....

actually that will void your warranty in california. any type of system plugged into a obdII port voids it. also a pyrometer guage will. is it right, no its wrong for them to do that. that is what the epa and whoever agreed too. i would take everything off keep it and just put it back to stock if something happens most programmers dont leave footprints anymore!!!!

The truth is that most programmers do leave a footprint. Anything that actually changes the ECU parameters at the ECU leaves a log and they can compare the log to stock parameters and bust you. The Edge intercepts the outgoing ECU signals and then sends out it's own to all the components so the log when read looks stock.

Note: the Edge insight is only a set of digital gages and not a programmer. It just reads the signals being sent out from the ECU but doesn't manipulate them.
