Default Cummins 6.7L and BioDiesel Use

Okay so here's what they say about using Biodiesel in our trucks and it's not a pretty sight at only 5%. But I did notice that it says that
Quote:
a maximum blend of 20% biodiesel (B20) can be used by government, military, and
commercial fleets who equip their vehicle(s) with an optional water separator, and adhere
to the guidelines in the Department of Defense specification A-A-59693 (in addition to:
ASTM specification D-975, D-975 - grade S-15 and ASTM D6751)
So I wonder why I can't use 20% as long as I adhere to those requirements? I need to see if I can't scrounge up those Documemnts.

The 2007 Ram Truck Cab and Chassis (DC) vehicle is equipped with a 6.7L diesel
engine. This vehicle is to use Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel. Due to limited
availability of Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel, during the initial production of this
vehicle, Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel (500 ppm of sulfur or less) may be used
ONLY

until Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel fuel becomes readily available and fuel pumps that
dispense Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel are required to be labelled as such. This is
expected to occur around
October 15, 2006. **
- ** Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel (preferred) or Low Sulfur Highway Diesel Fuel
(500 ppm of sulfur or less) are required for use in Dodge Ram Trucks equipped with a 5.9L
diesel engine. **
- A maximum blend of 5% biodiesel (B5) is acceptable as long as the biodiesel mixture
meets ASTM specification D-975, D-975 - grade S-15, and ASTM D6751. A biodiesel fuel
blend that is higher than 5% is not acceptable without additional fuel processing because
these higher percentage biodiesel blends contain excess amounts of moisture which
exceed the water stripping capability of the on-engine final fuel filter. Should a higher
percentage biodiesel fuels be used an auxiliary water stripping filter will be required.
- A maximum blend of 20% biodiesel (B20) can be used by government, military, and
commercial fleets who equip their vehicle(s) with an optional water separator, and adhere
to the guidelines in the Department of Defense specification A-A-59693 (in addition to:
ASTM specification D-975, D-975 - grade S-15 and ASTM D6751)
- Off-highway diesel fuel (i.e. farm or marine use diesel fuel) that does not meet Ultra Low
Sulfur Highway or Low Sulfur Highway fuel specifications (as listed above) is NOT
acceptable. Unknown sulfur and water content and unknown cetane number may
adversely affect the performance of the engine and fuel injection system.
- Fuel conditioners (additives) are not recommended and should not be required if you buy

good quality fuel and follow cold weather advice supplied in the Owners Manual.

I was wondering about Bio-Diesel...
Thanks for the information!

I too will stick with ULSD for now... sure don't want to screw up the warranty.

Default Bio 20%

I'm not sure why Cummins recommends only 5%. Bio burns cleaner, 20% bio provides 25% fewer diesel particles and has better lubricity than any of the diesel additives. It just amazes me that this has not caught on better. If we reduced our Diesel Fuel importation by 20% that would be a big deal. Bio Diesel can be produced for $1.00 per gallon right now.
Check out this report.

We can run a higher percentage Bio Diesel we just need to add an auxillery water stripper.

Squid is right on with the information he is posting 5%bio stock,20%blend with additional fuel filter/water seperator. from what I have been told, the reason behind it is the fuel injectors/system on the 6.7L will be damaged by the bio-diesels bigger particles that pass through the fuel filter . as water and the faty acids in bio-diesel break down the paper eliments in the fuel filter they allow "holes " for bigger particles to fit through, more than the 4.5 -5 microns the injectors can handle , and that causes injector failure, and emissions problems..and so on,,.here in IL. the fuel ranges from none ,5%,11%,15%and up to 20% depending on where you go. I go to Mo. and get no bio ultra low sulfur for mine.here in Illinois our gas has 10% ehtenol, diesel most with bio-blends,but we are an agriculture type state with alot of corn and soy bean grown here. but the gas with 10% ethenol added is leaner a/f on the dyno and gets worse fuel mileage. I havent tested the bio-diesel to see its mileage differance, because I dont plan on running it in my truck ,the new dodge trucks built here in st.louis come filled with the 5% blend off the assembly line. but there is tons to learn with this new engine... I am ready, I think mine is great. hope we all learn more from each other and you have good luck with yours..
