Default 4600 Miles in Two Weeks

We purchased our Dodge about a year ago and up until two weeks ago had only racked up 4,000 miles. So we load up the truck with the camper, food, clothes, dvd player, Ipod, Nintendo, wife and two kids, etc. etc. and head west. We more or less did the Grand Circle with a side trip to Salt Lake City in the middle. Truck was a pleasure to drive and ran great. Camper with food, clothes, pots and pans, and such is probably around 3500 pounds, so the weight was nothing for the dually but pushing all that air with the front of the camper is where the work is. We ran 75 to 80 where ever speed limits and conditions would allow. Ran into a healthy headwind on the west side of New Mexico and wound up with our lowest MPG of 10. Average MPG for the entire 4600 miles was 11.

I have read many posts in several forums from people claming to get much better MPG than I get. I dont quite know why there is so much of a difference but I am pleased with the performance and power of my truck. We crossed a pass at 10,470 ft. and saw temps as high as 100 degrees, and I can tell you this truck could care less.

One thing I did notice is the temperature gage fluctuates between around 190 and 210. Air temperature or load does not seem to have any effect on this and I rarely saw anything in between. I am assuming the 190 is running temp while not in regen and 210 is during regen. None the less it was a nice trip without any problems and I am thankfull for that.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun! As for the mpg I only state empty MPG figuring we all know that with a load it's not going to be pretty and anyone who says they are running loaded and getting over 10MPG either doesn't have all the anti pollution stuff on their truck or are math challenged. LOL

Loaded the edge helped a little 10 - 11 mpg depends on wind OK and foot. But like you say this truck loves to tow loaded.

Hi Winger, I know this is a Dodge Cummins sight but I couldn't help noticing you have a 2005 1800. I have a 2001 1800 with 56,000 miles. I dont take many long trips but do use it as a daily driver. I have a good rain suit and ride no matter what. The weather around the Louisville area is mild and I generally ride from the first of March until Thanksgiving. Dec and Jan are usually the only months you have to worry about snow and ice, and occasionally in Feb so I just leave it in the garage and drive the car.

Anyway back to Cummins talk...

I have found no correlation between regen and coolant temperature, it appears to be related to driving conditions.
BTW, I get 12.5 mpg on flat to hilly terrain pulling 10,800 lbs

I did not see the temps lower than 190 or higher than 210 so just assumed it was due to regen, I realy have no other info to support that hypothesis. I must admit I am still learning about this truck.

12.5 MPG pulling 11,000 lbs. is very respectable. I would be happy with that.

bubbubouy,
Yes I do ride it has a daily driver as long as it's not 110 outside during the summer, and I don't ride in the fog. Other than that I ride as often as possible. We do take long trips 4 heads was a good one also Canada was fun yes back to trucks. That was one reason for the toy hauler has my wife can't ride as long now days, 500 miles a day gets to her so we got the truck and trailer for going further east. I hate to admit I have to trailer my bike to get further than before.
