Sounds strange...I believe that regen stops when acceleration starts...So having said that, was it possible that you had started a regen process got to the 12% grade and proceeded to fill up the DPF? How many miles do you have on the truck?? Also, see Squid's post on the Crankcase Ventilation Filter...
P0489 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Ctrl Circ Low
This really sounds like Squid's problem. Let us know.
