Default Cummins 6.7L CASTROL TECTION EXTRA Diesel Oil

The first time I had the annunciator go off I stopped on the way home at Wally World to see if they had any Diesel Oil and to my surprise they had Castrol Tection Extra so I went home and here's what I found out about it so I went ahead and filled her up. Of coarse the true deciding factor on this oil will be an Oil Analysis done by Blackstone Laboratories - Diesel Engines

Castrol Tection Extra sets the new standard for conventional diesel engine oils for your fleet regardless of your fleet's age. Castrol Tection Extra has been re–engineered to exceed the needs of all your On–Road power units and offers maximum engine protection and reduced soot wear through our boosted dispersancy formulation.

Castrol Tection Extra far exceeds the demands of current diesel engine oil specification API CJ–4 and CI–4 Plus as well as those of Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, MACK, Volvo and others.

A Premium Base Stock for Superior Performance

Castrol has been formulating high performance diesel engine oils for over 100 years.

Using Group II hydrocracked, de–waxed base stock allows Castrol to provide the premium protection your engine requires including:
  • Unsurpassed viscosity protection among leading engine oils
  • Better soot management
  • Improved wear protection
  • Better oxidation control
The end result is a stable, high–performance base stock that provides the foundation for the advanced chemistry used in Castrol Tection Extra.

CJ–4 & Low–Ash Technology

Continuing in Castrol Tection Extra's tradition of maintaining its Low Ash Technology for lower piston deposits and reduced cylinder scuffing, Tection Extra also exceeds the new API CJ–4 specification that now dictates Low Ash formulations to prevent the pre–mature clogging of the exhaust after treatment Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Castrol Tection Extra helps you rest easy knowing that regardless of your equipments age, Tection Extra's Low Ash Technology is delivering to your business:
  • Reduced cylinder scuffing
  • Optimal piston ring performance
  • Longer engine life
  • Less oil consumption
  • Extended drain capacity (if monitored by used oil analysis)

Engineered for Maximum Soot Management

Castrol Tection Extra API CJ–4 formula has been boosted with more active dispersancy to better manage damaging soot which accelerates engine wear. Soot, if not managed properly, forms abrasive particles that wear away vital engine components such as, camshaft lobes, pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls and all critical metal to metal contact surfaces and leads to premature engine failure.

The Mack T–11 A engine test is used to show the viscosity control at high soot levels, with a higher number showing worse soot control.

Wear Protection in the Presence of Soot

Maintaining wear protection and engine durability in the presence of heavily sooted engines is the performance criterion for API CJ–4 oils. While the Cummins ISM is used for the CJ–4 benchmark testing for soot, Cummins is not alone in their concern in managing soot levels within their engines. All major OEMs' share this concern of soot related wear and corrosion that is a result of even higher percentages of EGR that promotes an environment in which acids are created.

Castrol's results show that Castrol Tection Extra, contaminated with soot, delivers superior wear protection for EGR–equipped engines.

Castrol Engineers Push the Limits

After Castrol Tection Extra successfully completed the Cummins ISM CJ–4 test that resulted in far lower wear than the specification allowed, and as part of the Castrol culture to exceed the specifications with our quality products, Castrol's engineering team continued to challenge Tection Extra's new formulation and ran the engine for an additional 200 hours for a total of 400 hours, two times what the specification required! Even after doubling the stringent Cummins ISM testing criteria, Castrol Tection Extra still demonstrated wear levels below that of the original 200 hour CJ–4 limits!

The CJ–4 Cummins ISM engine test is used to demonstrate wear due to soot in the oil at 400 hrs.

Oxidation Control

Castrol Tection Extra Group II base stocks are not only important in the superior handling of soot, but also in providing oxidation control. The process of oxidation is accelerated by heat, light, water, acids or solid contaminants. Most of these accelerants are generated by EGR systems. If not properly controlled, oxidation will cause rapid viscosity increases, sludging, gumming and in some cases engine failure.

Shear Stability

Today's tighter piston–to–liner clearances and powerful forces of piston rings in motion cause permanent viscosity loss or "shear" in an oil. This can lead to decreased film strength and increased wear and oil consumption. The exceptional shear value of Castrol Tection Extra correlates to consistent film strength and wear protection with minimal oil consumption throughout the drain.

Castrol's radial polymer, found in the viscosity improver, is the reason Castrol Tection Extra can stay–in–grade better than other engine oils. Many engine oils use viscosity improvers that employ "long chain polymers". Once the shearing forces within an engine attack a "long chain polymer", permanent viscosity loss is likely. Once viscosity is lost, oil thinning, reduced film strength and increased oil consumption can raise maintenance costs and decrease component life.

The industry standard for API CJ–4 is 90 passes through the Kurt Orbahn Shear Stability Test. Castrol found that 120 passes better represents the shearing that is actually taking place in the field. The accompanying graph shows that Castrol Tection Extra has less viscosity loss due to shearing than other CJ–4 products.

Kurt Orbahn Shear Stability Test at 120 passes.

The shear stability of Castrol Tection Extra correlates to:
  • Consistent film strength throughout the drain
  • Reduced oil consumption
  • Longer engine life
  • Lower cost per mile
